I simply wished to comment on how much I am enjoying the "5 Minutes with Jack" podcast. I personally wish to encourage you to stay with this short "5 minute" format. Leo Babauta of Zen Habits posted a thought provoking interview with Seth Godin a while back on the "short format", showing research that people's attention span is either growing shorter, or pulled in too many directions, and that short seems to be the new way to go (and I would love to hear you comment on the interview). My husband is a long time subscriber to your Survival Podcast. I catch a few of the episodes, when he mentions that they would be of particular interest to me, but I am mainly familiar with your ideas through conversations with him. I've asked him to suggest to you, that you consider offering a 1 hour weekly synopsis of your 5 hours of the Survival Podcast, and that I would gladly pay for that podcast. Maybe he hasn't emailed you, as he's afraid you'd call him an assclown (and I don't care if you think me a bimbo for my suggestion either LOL). As much as I appreciate all you do, I simply don't have 5 hours for one podcaster ... I only have 4-5 hours total per week to listen to a multitude of topics. Keep up the excellent work Jack, and keep it short and not-so-sweet !!

Cant hear any of your audio files. Video is great, but audio files are not. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this. My audio works fine both for listening and recording. This is the only place I can't hear anything

I think there's something to be said for both perspectives. Why does it have to be either or?

Let's face it, a lot of the businesses we use on a daily basis are not passion businesses. Your plumber or electrician probably enjoys the craft of his job, but it would be a stretch to say that it is his PASSION.

I think getting into the Demarcoist headspace of "what does the world want, how can I offer it?" can be a very fruitful way of thinking. I also think the Spirkoist approach of "sell what thou wilt shall be the whole of the business" is a very cool approach.

When you're planting stuff in your permaculture garden, some of the stuff is going to be unsexy and just there to support other stuff which is more exciting. It's the same in business, I think :) We need plumbers AND we need podcasters.

I understand where you are coming from here. I don't get anywhere near the emails that you do, but I still have people emailing me and asking me to link to their site to promote their products. If they did a quick once over, they would realize that I don't link to products. And, there are many times where their emails are just incoherent. I try to muddle through with some sort of comprehension but COME ON MAN!

On many of these emails, I have taken the time to send back some advice and ideas on how they could get their sites noticed and I think I have only received one thank you. Most of the time I never hear from them again!

I'm just going to start sending them to this podcast episode! ;-)

It's funny.. I don't keep up with the advances in facebook, but I love using it to communicate with fans and friends. Since I'm already a heavy photo publisher at my fan site, I had noticed that my visitors and comments were going up dramatically, so I was blissfully ignorant to the changes, but benefited from them nonetheless. Thanks for the info!

This is a good teachable moment for everyone-- though I recognize that the forums are built on SMF rather than WordPress, perhaps an episode on WordPress security would be worth doing. There are some simple configuration changes that you can make, in addition to keeping WP and all plug-ins up-to-date, that will drastically reduce the likelihood that your site will be brought down by hackers.

Numerically, the overwhelming majority of site takedowns and defacements are undirected-- they are just scripts looking for vulnerable sites rather that actual people who have identified you as a target. Hence relative obscurity is not a safeguard... but these automated, undirected attacks are typically thwarted by staying up to date and making well-known configuration tweaks to WordPress, MySQL, PHP, etc.

Hi. I'm new to the world of video editing and just looking to move up a notch from the crappy Movie maker that comes free with windows. I have issues with it frequently crashing. I know Sony Vegas Pro is your recommendation, but rather than spend the $600 now, I was looking at purchasing the MoviEZHD for $45.(linking to purchase from your banner of course ;) Does anyone have an opinion or comment before I purchase? Thanks for the shoutout on today's show.

As far as outsourcing we even have to consider it at times. Graphics for example are something we could do an ok job with but not great... and we can hire someone cheaper to do a better job. It's a requirement that CEOs must learn to outsource and know when they can hire someone else to do the job.
Otherwise what happens is your business can only grow to a certain point and then stagnate.

Thanks Jack.... this is absolutely useful info and definitely good to know! The whole social media thing (ESPECIALLY FB) can be a bit confusing and hard to stay on top of. It seems to run a close second to keeping up with big G's algo's. :)

Hey Jack, I started this December listening to 5 Minutes With Jack. I have been listening to TSP for a couple of years and am a Supporting member too. Love that you are living your dream and working on that for myself as well. I took your advice and went with Hostgator and my own domain name and using wordpress as you instructed. I am wondering about the best application for putting Facebook Twitter connections etc. So that people could read the blog and like it and it would show up on their Facebook site etc. Thanks and God Bless. !

Oh damn, did this one hit home! I am the poster child for ADD and the ONLY way I can get anything done is to schedule it, in writing, and then follow that schedule like there was a gun to my head. Otherwise I'll wander out into the woods or the garden and be distracted for hours.
